Merge contacts
Is this possible?
Merge what? Contacts on your phone with contacts on your computer? If so, yes.

Whoops - sorry I did not elaborate.
Take 2 contacts on the phone and merge them. i.e. take individual contacts from my neighborhood and merge them under one "neighbors" contact.

Not that I know of. There may be 3rd party programs that would do that for contacts on your computer.
In Address Book on the Mac, you can create Groups for contacts, and those Groups are used on the iPhone as well (for example, I have a Restaurants group of contacts, helpful when I'm hungry and in a hurry... 😉 ).

Why not jjst create a Neighbours Group and then add both your Neighbours to that Group?
Merging would be a little easier than creating a new group and re-typing all of the contacts into the new group, then deleting the old contacts.

In Address Book, I just create the group then drag in all the contacts I want into the group. The only thing I need to type is the name of the new group.
Contacts groups are like iTunes playlists - just a way to organize the content.
You don't have to re-type all contacts into a group, or you shouldn't have to. You certainly don't have to do this with the Address Book on a Mac.
With the Address Book on a Mac, you can select multiple contacts followed by creating a group for the selected contacts. Or create a new group followed by selecting and dragging the contacts to the group that you want in the group. A contact can be available in more than one group, and a contact cannot be in a group unless the contact is and remains available in the main Address Book database or "All" group, so there is no deletion of contacts after placing select contacts in a group.
