I need to buy a new MacBook Air but would like to use my large screen hooked up - I saw an old forum where it said that this was not supported, but someone else had said that it could be done with a special lead and I would be grateful for any clarification.

According to Apple this would have required a late 2009 iMac, among others.

+1 Jack-19 is correct. If you need an external display for your new MBA, please buy one.
