Using early 2009 24 inch IMac as spare screen

I need to buy a new MacBook Air but would like to use my large screen hooked up - I saw an old forum where it said that this was not supported, but someone else had said that it could be done with a special lead and I would be grateful for any clarification.

Hello shezerbear,

According to Apple this would have required a late 2009 iMac, among others.

In general this could only be done with a very few and very specific older iMacs and support was very limited. Read this topic for a 2021 perspective on this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252271436?answerId=254300142022#254300142022
