Hey there!
Good and valid question. Yes, I’d say using external storage sources is a good idea. You can get fairly large storage external drives for fairly cheap, and they are nowadays small and compact and easy to travel with.
Likewise, using Apple’s Optimize Storage feature, for services such as photos and documents, and relying on cloud storage is also a good and useful option, and makes it easier to access your data on other devices.
Also, if you can break down the use of the storage on your Mac, via Apple > About This Mac > Storage > Manage Storage, sometimes you have un needed data you can easily delete.
Likewise, if much of the data is categorized as System or Other, and is more than it typically should be, I can suggest a few locations to look at to clear that storage, unless it’s reading it incorrectly due to Spotlight, but that’s usually not the case.
