Why does Terminal change folder names upper lower case?

I just used the following commands in Terminal (on MacOS Catalina ver. 10.15.7):


henrik@MBPtilhdeHenrik Python-Kivy % ls

Geo-ESP

henrik@MBPtilhdeHenrik Python-Kivy % cd geo-esp

henrik@MBPtilhdeHenrik geo-esp % cd ..

henrik@MBPtilhdeHenrik Python-Kivy % ls

Geo-ESP

henrik@MBPtilhdeHenrik Python-Kivy % cd Geo-ESP

henrik@MBPtilhdeHenrik Geo-ESP %


Why does the Terminal seemingly change the case of the folder name between upper and lower case?

That is kind of unsettling.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

The drive is formatted case-insensitive so either the upper or lower case folder (or file) reference will work. It also ensures that you cannot have duplicate folder or filenames at a given filesystem level.
