My wife's A1708 MacBook Pro will not start
Macbook A1708 will not start. The power cable and charger works on my MacBook. I have tried holding the start button for 10 seconds. Nothing.

Do you hear the "ding" when connecting the charger to the laptop?
Leave the lid closed and connect an external display. Plug in the charger to the laptop to see if you see any video on the external display. Also you can try pressing the Caps Lock key to see if the Caps Lock LED lights up indicating the system is booting, but the display is bad.
You have the MBPro 13" (2017) non-touchbar model. Apple has multiple free repair programs for this model including ones for the Display backlight, the Battery, as well as some other programs.

Make sure to try an SMC Reset and connect the charger directly to the laptop since a multi-port adapter may not allow all of the power from the charger to make it to the laptop. Try using the other USB-C port and even try rotating the charging cable connector 180 degrees (rotate the connector upside down -- again try with both ports). Try leaving the laptop charge overnight.
Make sure to have frequent & regular backups. It is impossible to recover accidentally deleted data from an SSD after the Trash has been emptied plus an SSD can fail at any time without any warning signs. Plus Apple assumes you have backups so Apple feels free to erase the SSD or replace the SSD during a repair if they deem it necessary.
