Can I update immediately from High Sierra to Big Sur?

I still run MacOS High Sierra on my MacBook Pro 13" 2017 and want to update to Big Sur. Can I just update straight to Big Sur or is that ill-adviced and should there be steps in between?

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

You can upgrade directly to macOS Big Sur.

Make a full backup of your mac first.

Check that your third party apps will still be operable under big sur

and if not do they have updates that will make them so

Check if any printers/ scanners etc will still be supported in big sur

Big Sur does not run 32bit apps so watch out for that.
