GarageBand monitor delay

I’m trying to record instruments on GarageBand while using a MultiMix16 FireWire as an audio interface. I need the monitor to hear the instruments as I play, otherwise I have to connect the amplifier, but since I live in a full house, that’s quite inconvenient. Thus, I’ve tried using the monitor option. Unfortunately, without using effects or anything of the such, I’ve been experiencing an indubitably noticeable delay. Could it be that some of the wires are too long? My MacBook is a MacBook Pro 2016, and I’ve searched for the “minimum delay” option in GarageBand preferences but have yet to find it. Is there anything I can try to reduce the delay? Thank you
