PAIRING APPLE WATCH 4 WITH IPHONE 6

I am trying to pair a watch 4 with my iphone 6. Info from apple says I need above 12 ios on the phone. Phone has 12.5.1 ios update. When pairing, message says that phone will not pair with watch and to update phone to ios 12 or more.

The watch will only pair if it has WatchOS5 or lower,WatchOS6 requires ios13 or higher.

Thanks. What fooled me is that I had read that you only needed 12.0 or better. Fake news.....
