I think my ipad is like 8 years old and I tried to download an app to take notes on with a pencil and it said the app is not compatible with my ipad. is it because it is too old?

If you have an 8-year old iPad, then chances are there are very few apps left in the iOS App Store that are compatible with this iPad.
Also, an 8-year old iPad is definitely NOT compatible with ANY Apple Pencils
There are also no third party “smart”, Bluetooth stylii available for ANY older iPad models, any longer.

If you need/want an iPad with an up to date iPadOS with access to current, updated apps, and with Apple Pencil compatibility, then you really need to seriously consider a new iPad model OR a much, MUCH “newer” and less expensive, used iPad models, from better known, trusted Apple product/device retailers/resellers, locally or online, capable of running the latest iPadOS versions.
There are plenty of newer, older iPad models that can run the latest, current versions of iPadOS.

All 2015-2017 iPad Pro models
2018 6th gen 9.7 inch screen iPad
2019 3rd gen 10.5 inch screen iPad Air 3.
2019 7th gen, 10.2 inch screen iPad
