How to close an app on iPhone 6s

As explained in the support document you posted from, double click the home button, and swipe the app card up and off the screen.

If you just want to exit the app, simply press the home button once to return to the Home Screen

No need to close an app. Quitting and relaunching uses more battery than just leaving it open.
