Dark camera view screen

After taking photos with my iPhone 12 pro, in the bright sun, the screen gets so dark I can not see my subject. How do I prevent the screen/viewer from going dark?

Thanks for keeping us updated Steve1956.

Just to confirm, have you tried disabling your auto-brightness and True Tone settings and test? You can toggle auto-brightness in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. True Tone can be managed in Settings > Display & Brightness.

If you continue to run into complications after disabling these settings you can reach out to Apple Support directly using the link below.

Hello Steve1956,

It sounds like you're having trouble with the display brightness on your iPhone while taking photos.

Does this seem to occur in different lighting conditions or just in direct sunlight?

Have you tried adjust your display brightness? You can even toggle auto-brightness off if enabled in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Take a look at the resources below and keep us updated.

Adjust the brightness on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Yes, I have the brightness on the screen to the max. After being in the sun for awhile the screen/viewer gets darker and darker as long as you are in the sun. If you turn off the camera and wait awhile it comes back so you can see your subject in the viewer. Then after a few photos the screen gets so dark you can not see the subject. I am trying to photograph headstones in a cemetery. In the beginning it is fine. After 10-15 photos you can no longer see the subject in the viewer? How do I keep the iPhone screen/viewer from going dark? How do I stop the auto darkening feature? I now have a 12 and the 11 was the same way.
