mac mini 2014 will not restart with ethernet cable attached

In order to get my mac mini to restart, I have to remove the ethernet cable. If I reboot with the cable attached, it just hangs at a black screen, no start up chimes or anything.

I disabled Wifi to see if that was causing a conflict, but still the same.

I am on Mac OS 10.13.6 (trying to upgrade, but that is another story)

Thanks

  1. Try using a different or new Ethernet cable.
  2. Try Safe Mode followed by a normal restart.
