Big Sur 11.2.1 / Messages 14.0 Text Mangling Bug

Occasionally, when I draft text messages on Messages 14.0 (macOS Big Sur 11.2.1) on the new Macbook Air (M1), writing new words will rewrite previously written text with random characters like , ' a etc.

For example, suppose I draft a message to a group chain "Yeah, I think the next stimulus package needs" and then I continue to write "be bigger," partway through writing "be bigger" the app may rewrite "needs" to "ne,da." This is an example drawn from memory, rather than a specific instance, so might be useful in describing the behavior but less useful in figuring out why it's happening.

The problem fixes itself, temporarily, when I quit and restart Messages, but this has happened at least three times now in the span of two weeks. It's really annoying.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
