Am I doing something wrong, or something I’m not aware of?

It’s more likely that you are inadvertently tapping the airplane mode button in the control center from the Lock Screen. You can disable the access to the control center from the Lock Screen.launchthe settings app on your iPhone or iPad, scroll down and turn the control center switch off.

hope this may help

Hi there LRB47,

We understand your iPhone 8 Plus is unexpectedly in Airplane Mode, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

Get started by reviewing this page: Use Airplane Mode on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch

Specifically, the details below may help:

"You can set your iPhone and Apple Watch to mirror the Airplane Mode setting of the other device. Go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap General > Airplane Mode > Mirror iPhone."

If you're toggling Airplane Mode on your Apple Watch, this may explain why you're also seeing it on your iPhone.

If this isn't the case, please provide more details about when you notice this occurring.

Cheers!
