Bootcamp: impossible to partition

Hello, I am trying to use Bootcamp on my Late 2012 iMac - 3tb Fusion Drive.

I managed to create a bootable (split) iso, but when Bootcamp reaches the partitioning process it stops immediately with the "impossible to partition, check with Disk Utility to solve".

I have run Disk Utility checks in normal, recovery and safe mode (CMD+R, CMD+S, holding shift) but with no results. Can someone please help?

My diskutil list:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

  #:            TYPE NAME          SIZE    IDENTIFIER

If you have a TM backup, boot into Internet Recovery, and click on Utilities -> Terminal, and run

diskutil resetFusion

We are trying to 'correct' the issue as documented in How to fix a split Fusion Drive - Apple Support.

If you get any errors, it is possible that resetFusion is not supported in the Recovery OS version for your Mac, which would imply that we need to rebuild the CoreStorage Fusion drive manually in terminal. I can provide the exact steps, but we should first try resetFusion.

The Windows ISO is the only one that the microsoft website shows:
Win10_20H2_v2_Italian_x64.iso

This macOS version will not work properly with W10 1903 and later ISOs. See https://twocanoes.com/using-larger-windows-10-isos-with-boot-camp-assistant/ for reference.

On a 2012 Mac with a 3TB Fusion drive, this layout is created when Windows is removed. We need to correct this. Do you have a Time Machine backup of macOS and all your files? If not, can you create one now.

I have tried to create a small FAT partition using disk utility to check if creating and deleting a small partition would fix anything. At the end of the partitioning process the computer shut off by itself. On turning it back on, it showed the apple loading screen and at the end of the loading it shut off itself again. Turned the computer on in recovery mode, ran disk utility, upon repairing it showed an error message stating that it was impossible to restore core storage, I ran disk utility again and apparently there were no issues anymore. Upon rebooting, the mac now works again.

But I am still unable to create a BootCamp partition.

I have run diskutil list again, and it shows this

Hello,

Encountered a few difficulties on the way, but in the end it managed to reset fusion drive, install OS and restore backup, it took 12 hours!

My new current OS version is 10.15.7

Since it's a more updated OS, should I try to install BootCamp in some different way or keep on with the previous method, with the split up version of Windows?

Thank you :)

So I can't have BootCamp anymore because Apple designed the latest supported OS for my model so that it can't do anymore what was able to successfully do with a previous version?

Looks like if I want to keep on using my iMac as I was before I need to downgrade my OS, or worse I need to buy a newer Mac, not even the newest since M1 chips still do not support BootCamp (although in this case is a Microsoft issue).

I have already tried some alternatives – CrossOver and Parallels – but they both give me very low performance, what used to go at 50-60FPS in previous BootCamp it goes now at 8-10FPS with the virtualization, making it a non viable option.

This sounds like a classic case of planned obsolescence, doesn't it?

Sorry for the rage LonerT, it's not directed at you, but at the choices Apple made which negatively influenced my particular model.

Yes, this is how revenue streams show growth now. 😢

I have a 2014 iMac 5K. I still run Sierra/CoreStorage/W10. I have no plans to upgrade this iMac to High Sierra or newer. Also, Apple chose to deprecate the CoreStorage layer and forced users to APFS (in Mojave and later), which does not support the same features as CS. I personally think High Sierra is a bad OS. I prefer Sierra or Mojave.

My recommendation is to go to Sierra (not High Sierra) and run W10. I also used W10 1804 to install W10, and then let it be upgraded to the later W10 releases. This also addresses the issue of W10 ISO (install.wim larger than 4GB) issue.

Another option to consider is to remove the 3TB HDD and install a 2TiB HDD (or a 2TiB SSD) and then use Catalina.

Be aware that Catalina is the last macOS version for your 2012 iMac. As noted in macOS Big Sur is compatible with these computers - Apple Support, 2012 Macs are no longer supported by Big Sur.
