iPad Mailbox Preview Pane?

Having come back to an ipad after several years away I am quite confused by this lingering 3rd preview pane.

The preview remains even when I switch back to a different mailbox?...

Anyway to get rid of it?..I don't see anything in settings.

In Landscape view, As soon as you select a mailbox in the third pane, the Mail window should return to just the sidebar and main window.
