"Trim" option for video in Photos is greyed out - Why> And how does one make it active?

I am trying to trim a video I took on my iPhone. It is in photos on iCloud and on my computer, but I can't trim it in either place.

To be able to trim a video from your iCloud Photos Library, your Mac needs to be able to download it from iCloud.

  • You may want to check, if you have enough free local storage, to download the video. And that you are connected to Wi-Fi and no fire wall or antivirus filter is blocking the connection to Apple's cloud servers.
  • You may want to check the format of the video for compatibility - select the video in Photos for Mac and use the command "File > Export > Export unmodified Original".
    • Can Photos export the file, or do you get an error message? If there is an error message, what is it?
    • Can QuickTime Player open the exported video and play it?

If Photos can edit a video or play it, will depend on the system version and on your Mac model, on the codec of the video, and on the frame rate. Older Macs may not be able to work with videos with a high frame rate.
