How To Turn Off VPN Setting on iPadOS 14.4

I have an iPad Pro 12.9 4th gen with WiFi and Cellular running at the moment up to date software/OS 14.4.

I have a NordVPN account and had downloaded the app.

I noticed my location settings were reflecting strangely, even when I wouldn’t be connected to NordVPN or even have the NordVPN app open... The symptoms of which would’ve been normal... if I had been actively using the VPN app.

I also noticed I could NOT turn off the VPN setting! It would reconnect or keep trying to reconnect whenever I turned on WiFi— regardless of whether or not I had even used the NordVPN app that particular boot/restart!

I would sit in settings and see the VPN continually turn itself back on after I had toggled it off. It was not a matter of speed or even the app being open. It did this upon reboot. It also did not matter which WiFi network I chose: the setting refused to turn OFF.

I literally had to delete the NordVPN app to get the VPN setting to turn off. After app deletion, the entire VPN option disappeared from the Settings menu!

Is this expected behavior?? Why could I not toggle the VPN off and on directly in my settings? Is this some sort of security loophole I’m seeing/experiencing? I feel like it may be a permissions issue or maybe a setting in my NordVPN?

Either way, it makes me uncomfortable to think a non-accessed / closed app (despite being safely downloaded and installed from the App Store) would be able to control my iPad Settings, or whatever permissions it was controlling, to the point it would be able to - keep itself turned on or — keep turning itself back on #1...

..#2 that whatever was controlling this setting -was not me- (I do not recall allowing or setting this “new feature” in NordVPN) and whatever it is would not allow ANY change... -not even a _manual_ change after toggling input directly by the admin/user/me sitting at the iPad or even allow configuration options/settings in this iOS/iPadOS!

Thoughts/Reasoning behind this app or Settings behavior will be appreciated!!

I had to uninstall the NordVPN app entirely and then the VPN option disappeared/finally turned off.

I will post this feedback on the NordVPN App in the App Store as well.

Thanks So Much!

Perhaps your NordVPN App has an “always on” or “kill switch” setting - as this would be designed to ensure that your VPN connection remained active. This behaviour would be configured within the App - and not iPad Settings.

As for disappearance of VPN settings within iPad Settings, this is expected functionality...

  • The Settings > VPN shortcut will only be visible in iPad Settings if a VPN Profile has been configured.
  • The Settings > General > VPN section will always be accessible - whether or not a VPN Profile is present
