close all open numbers files
When I open Numbers it automatically opens multiple files that have been recently opened. How can I close the ones I don't want to continue to open? See the screenshot.

Close the ones you do not want to reopen before quitting Numbers.
OR check these two checkboxes in System Preferences > General:

System Preferences > General. Check the Close windows… box.
When this box is checked, It is useful to also check the Ask to… one as well to get a warning when closing something that has not been saved yet.

In System Preferences put a check by 'Close windows when quitting an app' :

v 6.1 of what? This is in System Preferences > General (not Numbers > Preferences), and applies to all apps.

Yep, that's what I use: both checked. I don't want a document saved over the existing one without me saying to do so. Sometimes I'm just playing around with an idea and don't actually want to save my changes.
I am still on v6.1 until this summer. I don't have that option.
