close all open numbers files
When I open Numbers it automatically opens multiple files that have been recently opened. How can I close the ones I don't want to continue to open? See the screenshot.

System Preferences > General. Check the Close windows… box.
When this box is checked, It is useful to also check the Ask to… one as well to get a warning when closing something that has not been saved yet.

Yep, that's what I use: both checked. I don't want a document saved over the existing one without me saying to do so. Sometimes I'm just playing around with an idea and don't actually want to save my changes.
Close the ones you do not want to reopen before quitting Numbers.
OR check these two checkboxes in System Preferences > General:

I am still on v6.1 until this summer. I don't have that option.
v 6.1 of what? This is in System Preferences > General (not Numbers > Preferences), and applies to all apps.
