Low Resolution iCloud Photos

When I download pictures from iCloud they are low resolution when I try to use them anywhere else. They won't work on Shutterfly or Upload to Kiosk. How do I fix this problem so I can upload them to these websites at a higher resolution?

I understand they store differently on a device but I was trying to download them one at a time from my iCloud onto my computer before uploading them to Shutterfly and that would not work either. Just wondering how to get the couple I was at the correct resolution if they aren’t store in my phone or on my Mac correctly and I can’t seem to download the correct version either

Hello, ehorntvedt!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! We understand wanting to have the ability to download and view your photos at the correct resolution. We'll do all we can to help get you pointed in the right direction. 'When you use iCloud Photos, your photos and videos are stored in iCloud exactly as you took them. If you turn on Optimize Storage, iCloud Photos automatically manages the size of your library on your device. Your original photos and videos are stored in iCloud and space-saving versions are kept on your device.'

For this information and more, check out this webpage: Set up and use iCloud Photos. Also, check out this guide for how to Manage your photo and video storage.

Take care!

ehorntvedt,

Thank you for returning to the Apple Support Communities with this information. We can understand wanting to download your photos from iCloud to your computer. Check out and follow the steps on this page: Download iCloud photos and videos. If you want to download your photo or video as it was originally captured or imported, choose Unmodified Original.

Best regards!

Can you explain in more detail, how you are trying to use the downloaded photos?

When you download the unmodified originals on your Mac, are you saving them in a folder on your desktop?

Have you checked the resolution of the downloaded photos with the Preview.app? hen you open a photo in preview, you can use the Tools menu: Tools > Inspector to see details about the downloaded file.

  • What is the format of the files? Are they RAW files or JPEGs, or HEIC files?
  • What are the width and height in pixels, when you download them?
  • Have the images in question been taken with the iPhone? If yes, how have you taken them? As a standard photo? As a Live Photos? Portrait Mode?

Any details you can give us might help to solve the puzzle.
