Unable to verify username and password for AOL Mail

El Capitan 10.11.6 I know this 24" Early 2009 iMac is an antique to most, but it serves my purpose with several apps that are no longer compatible with 64 bit OS on my MBP. I could find no solution to get Mac Mail working again with AOL - it had no problems until suddenly I got prompts to enter my password and couldn't. The usual solution to delete the account and add it back failed because it wouldn't accept my password and I got the same error message. I was unable to add the account back. I tried a new user account and booting in Safe Mode. Nothing worked. I spent many hours reading community boards, Apple Support documents and Mac web support sights - none worked. The solution is too simple to be true so I offer for those who need a fix:

Sign on to AOL Mail on the web.

Options>Account Information

Account Security>Manage app passwords

Select your app>Mac Mail

Generate - a new password specific to your OS will be generated

Use the new password to set up a new AOL account: System Preferences>Internet Accounts>AOL and follow the prompts entering the new password. The password is time limited so will not work later. The original password with your account will now work and you won't be prompted to enter you password . . . hopefully.

I hope this helps others!

Rod, I am dealing with a similar problem and your solution seems to be working. I am wondering what the deal is with the password. It seems that my Mac is still using the temp password from AOL used to reboots my AOL on my Mac Mail App. But you say this is temporary and I will be able to use my original AOL password. Do you know if I need to enter my original password into my Mac email preferences. The Mail app is still downloading all the emails my AOL email folder on the Mail app, so I'm assuming I should let that complete before I mess the password.

Thanks for the info!

Rick

Hi Rick . . . I have struggled with Apple Support and AOL for several years over similiar issues. It has gone all the up the ladder at Apple to the programmers. They've recorded my screen, activity logs, and things I can't even explain. Apple and AOL continue to point fingers at each other. With each subsequent OS update, I hoped for it to change but, unfortunately, it has not. I still get error messages unable to connect to server, enter password, etc. I used the Password Management link at AOL and generated a one-time password. It is time limited and is meant to bypass the authentication process. When used, it identifies your device and you don't get stuck in the connecting to server problem. After authentication, your regular password works. You don't need to change it and re-enter it, supposedly. This worked for a while but I am back to failure to connect to server. It occurs on my iPhone as well but the temp password workaround doesn't work on iOS, even though they say it does.. I'm living with it . . . I don't have any other solution other than all those suggested, including deleting the account and adding it back . . . then the time required to rebuild all of your mailboxes. I'd give up AOL but I have 50 years of identity tied to it. Do you ever think about how much of your online identify is linked to your email? I have a Mac genius friend who contributes in these forums. After 3 years trying to divorce AOL, he decided he could not rid himself of AOL. I'm old . . . don't have that much time to invest so I'll try living with it. Sorry I don't have better news for you,. Rod

Great idea and it would work if you could change the settings in your account. I had deleted the account so I could not access the setting. I tried the "Other" option to set up internet accounts and it didn't work. In addition to your link, Apple has a link to get your settings, Mail Settings Lookup https://support.apple.com/mail. After spending a great deal of time searching for a solution, I gave up and called Apple Support. The agent put me on hold for 10 minutes researching the problem and finally came up with very simple solution. I don't know how to create a tip but hope searchers could find this very simple fix. Thanks!

Glad it helped. I find the interaction between AOL and Apple formats is not healthy so you may have to repeat this password fix on occasion, but it always works. I would change email providers but one Apple genius friend of my gave up after trying 3 years. Do you realize how much of your identify is tied to your unique email address? Frightening . . . and nearly impossible to divorce and remarry without major work, trauma and possible financial and identity loss. So, I'm stuck with my old Baby Boomer intrigue, "You've Got Mail!" Warm regards! Rod

Sorry to hear. It's odd Apple Mail syncs on on all your other devices except your MacBook. Since you had a repair and this problem persists afterwards but only on the repaired device, I'd call Apple and ask them to help you sort it out. Sorry I can't be of more help. Apple and AOL don't get along well after all these years and when I talked with each of them about this, they point fingers at each other. But give it a try. Good luck.
