Iphone 12 won't sync up to MacBook Pro 2010 with USB A 2.0 port

I know this is 2021 and I have a MacBook Pro 2010. iPhone 6 and 7 when connected to the MacBook Pro 2010 with a lightning cable will sync and transfer fine. The iPhone 12 will not. When you plug in the iPhone 12 iTunes comes up but when it gets to step 2 or 4 in the sync process it disconnects and I get an error about it being disconnected. I have tried adapters, new cords, both USB ports. I have reset the SMC and tried it in safe mode. NO change. I did get the message to trust the phone initially. It does work with iPhone 6 and 7. When I check for the phone in the System Information under USB it shows up in the USB 2.0 section but not in the USB BUS section. Both devices are fully updated. MacBook Pro has High Sierra 10.13.6. Anyone have any ideas?
