I let the laptop sit for awhile before I press the power button so that I can see a big break identifying the time between random shut down and restart.

I've reset everything. I've booted in Safe Mode. At first, I thought the problem may be other software, but I'm beginning to think this is a MacOS issue. Any ideas? I've tried to download a clean OS to reinstall; however, the Mac AppStore won't let me. This problem started with version 11.2.

Point # 1 - Were there pre-existing Unresolved Software Issues. They should be resolved prior to upgrading - many will / may carryover to Big Sur making the system unstable / unusable.

Point # 2 - Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS. The Built-in Security of Big Sur is all that is required.

If above is not applicable - Disregard

To the point of rolling back to 11.1 - Time Machine Backup is your best friend. Just be sure to pick the date when 11.1 was in use.

I'm running into a similar issue, feels like the same thing. My Mac will run for about 2-5 minutes, then the screen goes black for about 30 seconds and then it shuts down. This only just started after installing 11.2.3. I upgraded from 11.2.0 or 11.2.1, I did not install 11.2.2. This issue did not occur before I upgraded to 11.2.3. In other words, it seems to have been introduced between 11.2.0 – 11.2.3.

2014 15" MacBook Pro, Nvidia GeForce GT 750M 2GB

It does not happen when I have a monitor (Dell P2715Q) connected via DisplayPort though, until I close the laptop to go into Clamshell Mode or disconnect the monitor at which point it locks up immediately and shuts down. Seems to be GPU related based on this, and I see very similar logs as above leading up to the shutdown.

My machine also won’t sleep anymore, or restart. Sleeping causes a shutdown, and restart essentially acts as a shutdown. I can’t tell if it’s just crashing during the shutdown phase of the restart though.

I’ve already tried a number of the standard troubleshooting steps:

  1. Tried to reproduce the issue in safe mode - does not reproduce
  2. Reset SMC and PRAM
  3. Ran first aid on my disk
  4. Re-installed macOS from recovery

None of these resulted in a change, the issue continues.

I’ve also tried using gSwitcher to lock to one GPU or the other but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Neither does switching off “Automatic graphics switching”.

I’m happy to help troubleshoot more or provide logs. I’m also curious if there’s a way to revert back to 11.2, but haven’t been able to find one yet.

I've found that the trick for my case is to have something, anything, connected to the Thunderbolt port. Could be a mDP monitor, or a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter (with or without a cable connected). I've had the ethernet adapter hanging off for about a week now and it's running stable.

As soon as I disconnect it the timer starts; within a few minutes it locks up and shuts down.

Curious: is your battery also in a "Service Recommended" state? I'm wondering my bad battery is causing some form of electrical issue that's resolved when a contact is made through the Thunderbolt port. I'll likely try disconnecting my battery, just need a Pentalobe screwdriver first.

Amazing! That worked for me. Where did you find that solution?

I still believe this is a software issue. I didn't have this issue with 10.9, 11, or 11.1. It started with 11.2. I disabled applications, I used clean installs, I tried leaving the computer plugged and unplugged, I tried different angles of the display, I've tried the beta software, and I sprayed the dust out from inside. All came up with random shutdowns.

Since reading your suggestion, I've had a thunderbolt to ethernet cable in the laptop and the laptop has been running with no issues.............so far.
