The "x" key has lost it's function under Logic Pro X 10.6.1

Regardless of whether I use the typing keyboard of the MBP or an external one, there is no more function. I can press the "x" key over and over again and nothing happens. I did a reset of the key commands but no success. It seems like Logic is simply not able to recognise this key anymore. Every other key works fine. Has anyone an idea what I can do? Thanks in advance for your help.

Try the following:

  • Open the Key Command Window (opt+K)
  • In the Toolbar, click the Pressed button to enable it
  • Now when you hold down a key (or a key combination with modifier keys), the window changes and shows only the Key Commands that are currently assigned to the key (combination) that you currently press).

In this screenshot, I press the X key on my keyboard and you will see the Key COmmands that are assigned to X. THis is what you should see. If not, then the X key is not assigned and you have to re-assign it

Hope that helps,

Thanks a lot for your help, I'm grateful. Now I have followed your advice regarding the pref files but also after deleting those the x key is still not working. That also goes for Musical Typing. I had already tried different sets of key commands before plus initializing the KCs.

Shutdown the computer, then restart. You will often be using the cached prefs unless you reboot or restart.

You're welcome,

reinstalling Logic might not always fix issues that are account (user) specific.

  • a few basics: that I suppose you created an empty project? and the issue is there?
  • have you recently installed any third party driver for midi keyboards/ audio interface etc
  • when was the last time that the X key worked? can you think of what might have changed since then?
  • as long you have a back up you can try reinstalling Logic Pro X, drag it to the trash and empty, download again from the mac app store . you can use a third party app Appcleaner that thoroughly uninstalls app leftovers and you can choose what to keep if you want to (it won't delete Apple Loops, Implulse responses and the contents of User>Library>Application Support>Logic if I remember well.)
  • if the issue persists I would assign a different combination of key(s) to replace X,
  • reinstalling Mac OS might not fix your issue and for a MacOS clean install I personally think of the time that it'll take me to put everything back together from scratch, restoring from backup will /might bring the issue back. It's up to you though.

In my 12 years of Logic troubleshooting and 32 years of Mac troubleshooting this is a first, a letter not working in one specific aoplication. I think you should try a reboot (so: shut down, then power up).

But first: you are sure that there isn't some sort of Macro using the X key in Logic? Do you have any sort of key sequencing program installed?

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me and for the great help. Unfortunately the issue I am experiencing goes deeper as there is no input from the "x" key in LPX at all. It's not just that the key commands that were assigned to "x" are not working. When I type a word in Logic (say to change the name of an instrument channel) does not recognise the "x", regardless of whether I use the MBPs keyboard or an external one. Obviously the "x" key it's working fine in all other applications.

Thank for your help, it is much appreciated. I have been using Logic since Apple bought C-Lab/Emagic and I have never come across anything like it. It is bizarre but real. Since the issue has been an ongoing one for weeks I have rebooted my MBP many times, with no changes. Now with regards to macros, I have never used any within Logic and I am not sure what a key sequencing program is. Would you agree that (as a last resort) a clean reinstall should solve the issue?

Hi there,

you mentioned that you did reset the KC's, did you trash preference files or through the KC window preferences> initialize option?

  • have you tried a different set of KCs?
  • does X work with Musical Typing (Caps Lock Keyboard) cmd+k
  • If you haven't deleted the following prefs files ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.logic.pro.cs and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.logic10 go to Finder > Go > Go to Folder (shift+Cmd + G) copy/paste the locations in bold type and delete.

There are a few more things to try but hopefully the above can help, before trying a clean install.
