Since March 2020 my MacBook Pro battery life is declining

Hi there,

I am using MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports, 2,4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB) with touchbar. Bought it in 2019 and was normal. Eversince the pandemic started in March 2020, I am experiencing a declining battery issues. To date, when I unplug from power, it can only manage 1 hour 15 minutes on battery. The fan is working overtime due to heat from the processor. How can I fix this so the battery can last up to normal again when unplugged from power?

Hi djokomur2123,

Wondering how long it is since you updated to Big Sur ?

The way I understand it, after the update a lot is happening behind the scenes to get everything in the system up to the minute. Leaving Mac turned on, and using adaptor power (perhaps also overnight) can speed up the process.

If your update was accomplished some time ago:

Apple has a support page on fan issues:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202179

View energy consumption in Activity Monitor:

There's also an article on maximising battery life and lifespan:

Hope there's something useful to you in the above.

Cheers

Thank you for your reply, Djoko.

With the new info., hope your issue may get attention from someone with greater know-how, if need be.

All the best with the update, and SMC reset.

BTW There's Apple info. on NVRAM / PRAM reset available too:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

(seems to help in a variety of situations ... though custom settings have to be sre-chosen)

(Notifications can now by turned off (temporarily, for a choice of times: eg until tomorrow) with "Do Not Disturb"

from the icon on right of top menu bar)

Cheers!

Hi there,

The issue regarding fan and battery has been going on even before the update to Big Sur, which was about 2-4 weeks ago I udpated due to the request. I always put my laptop to auto sleep mode at 9pm-6am to avoid disturbance from emails notification.

Now it is asking to be updated again. I will try to reset the SMC after the update. As I type this reply, on battery power, the fan rpm goes up and the battery went down by 10%.

Warmest regards,

Djoko
