Yes - Two more thoughts...
A. Restore from a Backup:
Have you recently created a backup of your Mac prior to all of this? if so, restore from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, prior making any major change to your device, such as an upgrade.
B. If No Backup Exists:
If you have no pre-Catalina backup of you Mac, then you would install the macOS anew:

Where to go from here....
Reinstall the macOS anew:
The install would have nothing on it, but the macOS. Back up your Mac prior to erasing it. Once erased, get it back on there through use of migration assistant.

I try to do this but it doesn’t work the desktop and documents folder won’t stay selected. i have tried signing in and out of my apple id, ive gone as far as reinstalling my mac os, ive signed into a user profile on the MacBook and tried signing in to my apple id that way and the icons will not appear back on my desktop
