iPad A1822 2017 5th Generation: FaceTime no ring tone

Facetime works but the ring tone does not work so calls can be missed. In the past the ring tone did work so something has changed but having spent several hours trying online configuration advice I have failed to fix the problem. I now know that configuring notification, sounds, confirming Do not disturb is not set etc does NOT fix the problem.

I wonder whether it is ipadOS 14.4 or that my A1822 model only supports WIFI and not Cellular?

or could it be that my broadband supplier does not support Apple Sim? Who knows?

Next, check the silent mode. For that, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right edge of the screen. Look for the bell icon. If it’s red, that means mute is enabled on your iPad. Tap on the bell icon to disable mute and enable the ring mode.

Hello, Sheila.

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. We’re sorry to hear that you haven’t been able to get your ringtone to work for FaceTime on your iPad. You mentioned that you updated to iPadOS 14.4, that have tried some extensive troubleshooting, but you haven’t had any luck in getting FaceTime to alert you on an incoming call.

We suggest starting with the steps outlined here, if you haven’t already worked through them:

If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If you’ve already worked through those steps, we also noted that you question whether the fact that you have a Wi-Fi model could be a factor. We can answer that for you. FaceTime is a web-based app, so it relies on your internet to make a connection. This means that the lack of a SIM or cellular service won’t impact your FaceTime ability. The strength of your Wi-Fi signal may be impacting the call. You mentioned that your calls are missed because you aren’t hearing an alert, and we’re curious to learn more.

Would you mind running some tests for us? The response to your tests will help us narrow the root cause of your concerns.

  • Have a friend or family member call you on FaceTime while you are near your router and have your iPad in front of you, locked and in use. You’ll need to make sure your Wi-Fi signal is strong when you test. Do you see a banner or alert about the incoming call? Do you hear an alert?

  • Now lock your iPad and turn it facedown on a table. Have a friend or family member call you on FaceTime. Do you hear an alert? Do you get a notification on the Lock Screen or in Notification Center? How long did they let it ring before disconnecting?

If you’re receiving notifications about a missed call and not an alert or notification while the call is being placed, it’s plausible the call isn’t coming through your Wi-Fi before the other side hangs up. If you can narrow it down to a Wi-Fi or connection issue, make sure you’ve followed the guidance here:

If you use FaceTime and iMessage behind a firewall - Apple Support

If you receive the notification banner while your iPad is in use, or if you see the alert on the Lock Screen but don’t hear the ringtone, it’s likely a notification issue.

Warmest Regards.

Sheila,

Thank you for the details on your tests. We can see that you have the ability to answer with a notification when you’re using the iPad, but you didn’t hear the notification when you turned it facedown. Did you hear a sound when you saw the banner when it was unlocked and next to your router? If not, we’ve definitely narrowed it down to the alert sound and not the ability to receive a FaceTime notification.

What do you have set in Settings > Notifications > FaceTime for Sounds?  If you tap that field and go into the menu to assign another sound, can you hear the samples as you change selection?

If you can hear the selections, but not your actual alerts, is it possible you have set the notifications to “Deliver Quietly”?

This article has great visuals and guidance:

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

We look forward to learning more.

Cheers

Thanks for your prompt and very useful reply.

I will recheck settings but not optimistic as have done this many times previously. Also I will follow-up on suggestion that it may be firewall related.

Test 1 - phone and unlocked iPad next to router, - iPad window appears immediately phone attempts Facetime and, if answered, Facetime sound and camera works 100% ok. If iPad not answered, the phone fails the call after approx 30 seconds of trying.

Test 2 lock your iPad and turn it facedown on a table - no ring tone, phone eventually gives up and message on iPad screen says name of caller and 'Missed Facetime call'

Hi Alicia_K1

In answer to your questions :-

Did you hear a sound when you saw the banner when it was unlocked and next to your router? No

What do you have set in Settings > Notifications > FaceTime for Sounds? Ringtone Opening (default)

If you tap that field and go into the menu to assign another sound, can you hear the samples as you change selection? Yes - loud and clear

If you can hear the selections, but not your actual alerts, is it possible you have set the notifications to “Deliver Quietly”? Cannot find this setting in Notifications

Thanks for your help
