This is often a sign of a failed or failing drive (but there can be other causes). Is your data backed up that is on the drive?


Open Disk Utility and get information about the drive. How is it formatted (HFS+, APFS, etc.) and what is the partition method (GUID ...).


You can try running Disk First Aid on this drive from within Disk Utility.
