I've purchased final cut pro x, my laptop does not support the newest version, but says it will download an earlier version of the software, but it's not working for some reason

Go to the App Store and sign in the Apple ID used to purchase the application. If you have the application in your Applications folder move it to the trash. In the App Store click the icon in the lower left. This will take you to your Purchased page. Find the application there, and download it from that page.

First, what are complete specs of the computer? Second, what OS are you using? What isn't working? What exactly are you doing, and what happens when you do it?
13-inch, Early 2011 Mac Book Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, MacOS High Sierra version 10.13.6 (that's as far into software updates I'm able to go). I cannot load final cut pro, I was able to download it, but then it asked me to update and I'm stuck there with nothing happening.
I downloaded final cut pro x on a different laptop after signing into their App Store with my information. The program worked on their laptop because it's newer. I went back to my laptop and opened the program in my App Store, and this is where I'm stuck.
How were you able to download it? The App Store will only sell the current version. If you try to purchase it you will get a warning that you need to update the system. Or did you purchase FCP previously, and have it installed on your system?
Wow thank you. I'm so dumb. I just went to my applications and saw final cut pro there like you said. I opened the program and it's working fine. I feel silly. As if I couldn't figure that out on my own. Really appreciate your help. All is good now. Take care!
