antivirus and malware protection
do I need to buy antivirus (total AV) and/or malware (malwarebytes) protection for my Mac or does apple protect sufficiently?

Malwarebytes for Mac:
Malwarebytes for Mac would do just fine. If you have any other Security Software installed, then uninstall it. Restart your Mac, once uninstalled. Contact the Developer of the software, asking them which Uninstaller to use. Just dragging it into the Trash would result in shortcuts and broken files laying about. So, once again, use an Uninstaller.

Use common sense and keep MacOS up to date and you'll be fine. The free version of Malware bytes is ok for an occasional scan but I wouldn't pay for the full version.
