Magic Trackpad only works when plugged in via Lightning cable

The trackpad works normally when plugged in. When I unplug and rely on bluetooth, it becomes laggy and unresponsive. If I do the turn off bluetooth/restart trackpad cycle, it will work normally with BT, but the next time start my Mac, problem returns.

Is there a way to permanently solve this?

Magic Trackpad takes long time to connect at startup. I have Mac mini m1 and suddenly the Magic Trackpad is taking very long time to connect at startup. However, it immediately connected when booted in recovery mode. I tried removing it from bluetooth and added back again but the issue still exists. I have 5 bluetooth devices connected to Mac mini.

Magic Trackpad 2 lags consistently every time I click the volume icon I'm running Sonoma 14.0 on a 2020 M1 mac mini and have my trackpad connected via bluetooth. The battery is fully charged. It works perfectly fine until I click on the volume icon in the menu bar, at which point it lags to the point of almost becoming unusable until I click away (which sometimes doesn't work because the lag is so bad). Any ideas?
