My 7 year old macbook pro has a black screen with a padlock on, no password works.

i cannot start up in recovery.

apple support have been no help, want me to drive 4 hours during a pandemic to a store (I’ve broken a leg so not going to happen anytime soon).

Also despite this being a gift years ago they want a receipt. The family member does not have it all these years later.

last thing- I’m working from home and everyday without a laptop is a day without pay. 😭

Unfortunately if you have a firmware password enabled as described in this article:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204455

and you don't know or remember the password, then you will need to take the laptop to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Since the firmware lock is a security feature you also need to prove ownership of the device which means you need a receipt showing the system serial number along with your name plus proper ID to verify your identity so that Apple can remove the firmware password. The Apple Store or an AASP can tell you exactly what paperwork is necessary & acceptable.

If someone else purchased the laptop, then they will need to be the ones to take it to an Apple Store or AASP. If they purchased it direct from Apple, then Apple may have their purchase information. They can check with the place of purchase to see if they can be give a copy of the receipt.

Good luck.
