M1 Mac Mini has snowy display after waking

My m1 mac mini is connected via hdmi to a single samsung 1080p display. Often but not always, when I turn on the monitor in the morning after leaving it untouched for several hours I see a snowy screen at monitor start up. Sometimes the screen flashes green too.

My computer is not set to go to sleep. I remedy this by turning off the monitor or unplugging the hdmi and power cord and it quickly comes back to the expected display.

I took the latest update over the weekend so I'm still puzzled that this is still going on. Is there a fix?

How long is the cable? Replace with new 5 feet (1.2m) or less, preferably HDMI certified.
