How do I put my Mini to sleep without immediately waking it?

I am a Windows user and this is my first Mac. I spent today getting it up and running, installing software, configuring preferences, etc.. There is one thing I am unable to figure out.

When I am done for the day, I want to put the Mini to sleep. If I use the Apple menu -> Sleep, the screen goes black instantly, and I assume the Mini is now asleep. But I want to clear my desktop by putting the keyboard and mouse (both bluetooth) in a drawer. The keyboard is not a problem as long as I don't accidentally tap one of the keys. But the mouse ... how do I move the mouse without waking the Mini?

Related question: does turning off the display put the Mini to sleep? If so, that would be a solution.

Don't touch or move the mouse.

Powering off the display does not sleep the Mac.

Try setting "Turn display off after a few minutes in the Energy Saver preference and un-check "Prevent computer from sleeping when display is sleeping" then just put your keyboard and mouse in the drawer and walk away. The display should sleep after a few minutes and the computer should go to sleep shortly after that.
