The battery runs to 30% then shuts off . On switching on again the battery is flat and red ! Any ideas?

As described, your iPad battery has reached the end of its usable life - and likely requires battery service/replacement.


As a first step, you might be well advised to directly contact Apple Support - and request a remote battery diagnostic. If the battery test indicates that replacement is required, you’ll be able to explore your potential options.
