Airpods sound drops on Apple Watch

For months I have been unable to use my airpods with my apple watch because, although the airpods are connected to the watch, the sound drops after a few seconds. I have tried resetting the watch, unpairing and repairing the airpods and nothing seems to work. They work perfectly fine with my phone, as well as I tried connecting my Bose headphones on my phone and had no issues. Anyone else having these issues? Thanks!

Hello Ralu_rock,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you've had some struggles using your AirPods with your Apple Watch, as the audio stops a few seconds after starting to play. We'll do our best to assist with this.

You've done some nice isolation here, good work. If the AirPods work fine with your iPhone, then we'd recommend the following:

  1. Check for software updates for the iPhone and Apple Watch. The AirPods are updated along with the iOS updates, so it's important everything is up to date. See the following for help updating both devices: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and Update your Apple Watch
  2. Reset your AirPods, when connected to your Apple Watch: Reset your AirPods
  3. Test multiple audio apps on your Apple Watch and connected AirPods. (This will help us isolate the issue further.)
  4. Make sure it's in range of your paired iPhone, unless the music is stored on the Apple Watch itself.

Should it continue, please reply back with the following:

  • What happens when you pair the Bose headphones with your Apple Watch?
  • Does the same issue occur while on calls using the Apple Watch and AirPods?

Wishing you the best, take care!

Hi Ralu,

This could be related to the AirPods automatically trying to switch between your associated devices. On your paired iPhone in Settings > Bluetooth > [AirPods Name] and tap the 'i' > Connect to This iPhone/iPad > Automatically. If so, we'd try to disable this temporarily. Then pair the AirPods to your Apple Watch and test it out a bit more. If this is the cause, then we'd recommend to Contact Apple Support

If it persists, does this happen when using specific apps? For example, if you first use the Music app or does it make a difference if you try to use the AirPods to take a call on your Apple Watch?

Let us know how it goes and we'll take it from there.

Cheers!

The Bose headphones work without issues while paired to my Apple Watch, during calls or when listening to music. The AirPods on the other hand, connect to the Apple Watch and after a few seconds of working, the sound is lost completely. They continue to show as paired to the Apple Watch however there is no sound, from either music or phone call. They work perfectly fine with my phone, not the Apple Watch. This all started happening after I updated to watchOS 7.3.
