photos not syncing on macbook air

2019 macbook air running BigSur 11.2.3. Photos taken on iphone 11pro. Using icloud storage. Photo uploads & syncs to icloud account just fine. Will not auto download into photos on the macbook. Photos app on macbook stuck on "updating..."


Have tried going into system preferences and turning off the icloud sync for photos, rebooting and then turning sync back on. No change. Also tried turning on/off icloud sync preferences directly with in photos on the macbook.


worked fine yesterday


Any ideas what to try next?

Where is your library stored? System drive, or external - if external, what is the format. Were there any updates to the system between yesterday and today?


When you say "updating" do you mean the status at the bottom of the all photos view, or are you looking at a blank screen with updating on it, and currently unable to use the app at all?


In any case:

You have forced a complete resync of the library, by turning iCloud off/on.


This can take some days - or even weeks for a large library. As an indication, my 50GB 5000 file library took 48 hours full time. Progress indicator frequently does not update for some time during this period.
