Photos library will not open (4302)

This problem has come up before on Apr 11, 2020, and the answer given then was:

  • Copy the library to be imported onto the hard disc
  • Hold down the Option key while starting Photos, and from the dialogue box select the new library
  • Then press and hold the Command and Option keys while clicking Choose Library.

I have tried this, and it attempts to repair the library. However, once the progress bar reaches 100%, the library still cannot be opened and the same error message is given.

I am trying to move a photo collection

  • from an iMac running Kernel version "Darwin 10.8.0"
  • to a newer one running BigSur.

The library was restored to the new machine from a TimeMachine backup taken on the old one. It contains thousands of photos and has a size of 128 GB.

The fallback position would seem to be to "Export" all the photos from the old machine, then import them into the new Photos library. This is not an appealing prospect because of the large volumes of data, and furthermore I am worried that the Creation Date and Modified Date would be lost.

From within Finder, I can navigate to the new library and "Open package", and within the library I can see folders for "Originals", "Modified" etc. What would happen were I to try and import the individual files from the "Modified" folders? Would that:

  • bring across all the photos in their post-editing state?
  • would it also bring across photos that have never been edited?
  • would they retain their dates?

Guidance would be appreciated.

Importing from the modifed folder will not do what you want. You will end up with low resolution low quality files, and you will lose the originals. What we need to do is understand why it can't be upgraded.

What version of iPhoto do you have on the old mac. If it is V7.x or earlier, you need to first run the iPhoto upgrader tool before transferring to the new mac (the tool won't run on the new mac)

See:

Next - where are you restoring the library to? If to an external drive, is it correctly formatted for a photos library? (APFS or MacOS extended (journaled), with the ignore ownership checkbox checked.)

I think I've spotted the problem - you are repairing it, not converting it.

You need to convert it to photos - which you do just by opening it in photos. As you are doing with the option key, but just select the iphoto library, then click choose library. Photos should then open and convert.

Hopefully the repair hasn't done any damage. It might be worth copying a fresh copy from the time machine backup first. Or you can just try the one you've repaired, and get a fresh copy if that one doesn't convert.

Thanks Tony for the speedy reply.

The version of the iPhoto app is 8.1.2 (dated 22/12/2008). I downloaded the utility program anyway and it confirms "Your library ... does not need to be prepared with this tool"

On the new machine, I used TimeMachine to restore the library into ..../users/..../pictures there are two library files:

  • iPhoto Library (188 MB)
  • Photos Library.photoslibrary (24 MB)

both on the same volume "Macintosh HD".

When the repair is running, it tells me iCloud photos is not turned on, so perhaps that is an issue (However, I've no intention of upoading it all the iCloud).

I'm going to see if I can open the library on an iMac Pro ........
