In effect the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current subscription period, so you won't be charged for the next one. However you do need to have made the cancellation at least 24 hours before the next renewal, otherwise it won't have gone through in time.

Roger, thanks for the info.

An elderly family member somehow signed up for two subscriptions on his iphone and we went through and cancelled them both. But when we tried to remove a credit card on file for the payment method we got a message that the card could not be removed because there were still active subscriptions. So am wondering if the subscriptions are cancelled immediately. We're trying to figure out why we were unable to delete the credit card.

You can't remove a card as long as there is an active subscription. You should find that the next payment isn't taken and the subscription has expired at that point.
