Can I use Apple Card as an expat in the UK

I'm moving to the UK for 3 years, and trying to determine if I can use the Apple Card as an expat without issues moving it to a new iPhone on UK cell carrier as well as loosing cash back and other other benefits since the majority of my use would be overseas.

I know the Apple Card doesn't charge foreign transaction fees but it is also only issued in the US, so what isn't clear is what prolonged use overseas and on UK devices would cause.

Check your agreement with Goldman Sachs. I don't have an Apple Card but with my credit card there's a 3% transaction fee on any foreign currency transactions (that's pretty standard). That would easily counteract the 1% back I get on purchases with that card. That 3% is actually 1% from Visa and 2% by the bank. When we travel abroad we use a VISA debit card from a credit union instead. The credit union charges no fees so we only pay 1% on our debit card purchases. We have had no problems getting the debit card to work in Europe, Japan and New Zealand (so far).

Frankly, when we travel we mostly take foreign currency cash to cover 90% of our anticipated expenses and then just use cards to make up the difference if we run short the last day or so.

How to apply for Apple Card - Apple Support

See if you're eligible

  • Be 18 years or older, depending on where you live.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful resident with a valid, physical U.S. address that's not a P.O. Box. You can also use a military address.
  • If you apply on a compatible device that you own, make sure it has the latest version of iOS, watchOS, or macOS.
  • Be signed in on your device with your Apple ID and use two-factor authentication.
  • If you have a freeze on your credit report, you need to temporarily lift the freeze to apply for Apple Card. Learn how to lift your credit freeze with TransUnion here.
  • You might need to verify your identity with a Driver License or State-issued photo ID.4

I meet all of the eligibility requirements - that isn't the issue. If I move to the UK after I have the Apple Card - will it continue to work and would there be a loss of benefits? Interchange fees are set by law much lower in Europe than in the US which might inspire Apple card and its issuing bank Goldman Sachs to not provide the cash back and other benefits if the card is primarily used in the UK.
