cant migrate files

I purchased a new Macbook Pro with a 4TB drive in it - I am trying to migrate from another Macbook Pro with a 2TB hard drive. When I try to do it the files show up at over 7TB so it will not transfer. Obviously, the file size that it shows is wrong and not possible. I've tried migrating from a time machine backup too - the time machine drive has only 1.5 TB on it so again not over 7TB. I even bought a new external drive and backed up the older computer to it so I had a single and clean backup with the same result.

I've erased and reinstalled the op system and still the same thing. I have no idea what the issue is or if it a problem with the brand new Macbook? Any thoughts?
