I can't find some photos on iCloud

I recently uploaded some photos from my Mac onto iCloud. Then I deleted them from Mac because I wanted to save space. Now I can't find them on iCloud. They are not in the deleted folder either. I have sufficient space on iCloud and I am pretty upset because they had sentimental value.

iCloud is not a backup system. It is a syncing system. Yes, if you remove files from your Mac they will be deleted from iCloud as well. Time Machine is a backup system.

Thank you for your reply. I tried this and I can see photos deleted from my phone but not the photos deleted from the Mac desktop.

Is this a fundamental feature of iCloud? If files are deleted from the original location, then they are deleted from iCloud as well? I though Icloud would work as a back up and help me clear space on my Mac. Something similar to an external hard drive.
