how to wipe out and dispose of an ipad 2

We have an old ipad 2 we want to dispose of. it no longer really holds a charge so not sure how to wipe it clean before disposing and then wondering what the safest thing to do is to get rid of it? We are 2 hours from the nearest Apple store.

Starting with decommissioning your old iPad, use this procedure to completely sanitise your iPad.

As for disposal, your old iPad2 has no residual value. You can send your iPad to Apple (they provide a free shipping kit), or simply wait until you are next in proximity of an Apple Store - where you can drop-off your iPad for free recycling.

If you have a much newer iPad (e.g.., iPad Air1, mini2 or later), then your might still have a small trade-in value:

Apple has a recycle service. They will send you packaging to send it in. Go the the "Select your device to get a trade-in estimate." section of https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in and fill in the requested information. If it has no value for a gift card, they will offer to recycle it.

If it will run while plugged in, use the following instructions to erase it: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
