Is there a way to find out on the iPad which generation it is?

Yes. You can find you model number and other information here:

Settings > General > About


Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.


If iOS 9.x is the highest version of iOS to which you are able to update, you with have a second or third generation iPad, or a first generation iPad mini.
