Display flickering

I have a June 2019 release, 13” inch Macbook Pro with model number A2159 (EMC 3301).

My screen is flickering – that is, it blinks black every few milliseconds. There are no lines yet, but sometimes bands that appear. I have called Apple Care and run some of the diagnostics they asked me to, including resetting the SMC. I have also updated my OS to the latest version. I have been advised that this is a hardware issue and will require screen replacement, which is an expensive affair.

I felt at first that the issue is one of hardware because the flickering stops when the screen is used at a low angle or when it is mirrored onto my iPad. So, I borrowed an external screen to use for a few days. There is no flickering on this external screen.

When I connect my external screen to the laptop, the flickering greatly reduces to almost none even at a 90* angle. Even when the external screen is not in use and powered off, the flickering is reduced. As long as the HDMI-DVI wires are connected to laptop and screen there is no flicker. This is not the case when I connect just the charger or USB to the laptop. Please see this video: https://youtu.be/AAd8wZtbKMY

Someone suggested that this might be an issue of screen resolution – this might be the case as I see the resolution change as soon as the screen is connected/disconnected (even when powered off) (the laptop screen goes black for a couple of seconds to adjust). I tried to adjust the resolution from the “Displays” settings to resolve the issue but was not successful.

I am looking for a good diagnosis of what the issue might be and any advice on next moves. I would like to understand what the problem may be exactly.

You've done some great troubleshooting there.

Try an SMC Reset and a PRAM Reset.

Unfortunately there is no way to know for sure what is causing this very peculiar issue. It seems that having some kind of load on the laptop with the external display is affecting the laptop's built-in display (even with the display powered off it is still having an affect). To really have a better understanding of what is happening would require low level testing the circuits on the Logic Board which very few people are capable of doing. Since that is not a realistic option the only thing that can be done is to start swapping parts, but even then it may not give you the complete picture on what is happening. You will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you a repair estimate.

Good luck.
