If you delete the ID, he may not be able to access any of his devices or any other ID information.
You could create your own Apple ID.
When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. You have to remove the current Apple ID. Devices are only meant to be used with one Apple ID.
He could create a new ID.

Im also guessing he can just do the same on his phone then? So basically there’s no need for him to be contacting me as he can just suck it up and make himself a new Apple ID?!
