Downloading originals so slooooooooooooow

Many moons ago I was running out of space on my laptop so I turned on optimise storage and my entire 160k photo library was uploaded to the cloud. Took a few days but seemed to go off without a hitch. I now have an iMac with oodles of space so I thought I'll download all the high res again.

Everything seemed to go well at first, the library 'updated', photos came flooding in for a good day or so. When it appeared to be complete, it changed to say 'Downloading 160,610 Originals'. After chugging away non-stop for about 24 hours now it has downloaded a grand total of... 21 images!

My download speeds are super fast, I don't think that would be the problem.

I've read elsewhere that the process can be slow but at this rate it will take years to download them all. If I go through and try and open individual images it will sometimes force it to download, sometimes it will just get stuck and do nothing. If I look at the size of the library in finder the size is increasing ever so slowly, like a few mb every few minutes. A restart didn't help.

Thanks for any help.

Hello azajohns,

It sounds like you are having an issue with downloading the originals of your photos back to your Mac. We have some information we hope will help.

As you are probably aware, download speeds can fluctuate greatly. Downloading 160k photos is going to take some time. If you notice the process slows, we would recommend restarting the computer so it resets the connection, and starts the process again. It should pick up where it left off.

You may also want to be sure there is no interference. Take a look at the information found here: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference - Apple Support

Have a good day.

Hi

From what I understand, the process is (at least) two steps. Download all the photos, then do a compare of the local and icloud library to make sure everything is synced, including anything you've added or edited during the download. I think it is the compare that is now going on (plus upload of anything you may've added while the download has been taking place)

Thanks Carl, after restarting the speed didn't seem to improve but I just left it to see what would happen. After about two days it suddenly started ticking over much faster, still slow, but faster. Not sure what it was doing for those first few days but I'm now getting a few thousand images per day. It will still take a good week or so at this rate, but I can live with that compared to the years I thought it was going to take. Thanks again :)

Just to share my ongoing experience should anyone happen upon this later. It's now been about 10 days. The download finally completed around day 8, at which time everything seemed to be fine. I shut my down computer happy that the saga was finally over, however on restarting photos on day 9, a curious message popped up at the bottom telling me that I'm now "uploading 163,000 images" (and counting). It seemed that for reasons best known to itself, now that all my images had downloaded from the cloud, it was now going to re-upload them all to the cloud. It is now day 10 and about 1000 images have 'uploaded'. I tried shutting down and restarting, but the process just continues on. I'm reserved to just let it run its course and see what happens. I'll repost with any updates, probably in another 8 days.
