Old iPad, can't sign in after changing AppleID Password

I have an old iPad (1st generation) that is still very useful for some things. I recently changed my Apple ID password (from my Mac) and now I cannot sign in on the iPad. After correctly entering the new password it asks for a recovery key, but the box provided is too short to accept the new style 28 character recovery keys...

Help!

On an older device, if a verification code is needed, simply append the Verification Code to your AppleID Password.

For example, if your Password is PasswordABC - and the Verification Code is 123456 - you would enter PasswordABC123456
