Old iPad, can't sign in after changing AppleID Password

I have an old iPad (1st generation) that is still very useful for some things. I recently changed my Apple ID password (from my Mac) and now I cannot sign in on the iPad. After correctly entering the new password it asks for a recovery key, but the box provided is too short to accept the new style 28 character recovery keys...

Recovery Keys are only needed when the password is forgotten, so there’s something odd happening here.

Is it possibly asking for a verification code and not a recovery key?

If resetting and reloading that old iPad doesn’t work...
