Can i upgrade the CPU in my 2011 iMac?

Hello,

I'm alright at taking it to pieces and rebuilding but is the CPU upgradable and if it is, Will it be noticably worth doing?

Etrecheck has said that performance is poor and highlights the CPU.

Thanks.

Dave.

The CPU is socketted, but your upgrade choices are limited to another 2011 iMac CPU. That is a relatively small performance bump. If your use is so demanding you need a significant bump you probably need a newer Mac.

I'd suggest more diagnostic testing.

  1. Check Activity monitor for runaway software processes.
  2. Run the Apple Hardware Test. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731
  3. Install iStat or some other thermal sensor monitoring software and check your CPU temperature when idle and active.
  4. Why not post the Etrecheck report? Maybe someone here will notice a software problem.

If you have a 2010 iMac with an Intel Core I3 processor, this upgrade may be considered....

You expand the memory capacity from 16 megs to 32, and from a Core I3 to a Core i5 or I7...

However, this is very, very, very hard, and requires major iMac disassembly....

Another major problem is getting a correct, working processor. Only a few models will work, and the only source is the used market.

Many are damaged upon removal, or shipping, and may not be functional to begin with, overheated, rough handling, broken pins, etc...

Hi,

Thank you for that info.

I know a newer Mac would work better and i even bought a Mini M1, UHD screen, new back up drives but then the retailer messed that all up by not delivering the Mac Mini twice so i cancelled it.

My use is not demanding at all and i only thought of an upgrade as Ertrecheck said it was incredibly slow.

I'll need to find my activation code for it as well.

Okay i will run all the tests again. AHT came back with 'no Problems' after a extended test. Etrecheck highlightred high cpu & memory usage by Finder at 112% and Kernal task at 89%.

Will install iStat and post it all here. The computer works okay with the exception of is running slow with two SSD's and 16GB RAM.

Cheers.

J.
