'Always' always has an exception.

Usually the question is 'when' to upgrade (early if you like new features, late if you prioritize stability), but someday you have to stop upgrading. Sometimes because the latest OS isn't supported. Sometime because the latest OS doesn't support a critical application or peripheral. Sometimes for performance.

+1 I find it useful to always upgrade if for no other reason to stay current. However if you rely on 3rd party applications that are critical to you, ALWAYS check with those developers prior to upgrading to see if their apps run on a the next version of Mac OS. Most professional grade apps will do this however their business can shift so always check to see what their requirements are.

For example for years Adobe and Microsoft sold stand alone apps, however they both have been transitioning to a subscription model. Before upgrading see how or if any these changes would affect you. If you want to continue using a third party's developers apps they normally will provide advance notice but it is also wise to not assume.
